Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is considered one of the greatest shows on Earth.

Calendar of the Carnival
Carnival in Rio takes place during the days preceding Ash Wednesday, the first of 40 meatless fasting days preceding Easter (Carnival derives from "carne vale" meaning "farewell to meat").
Although the official Carnival in Rio starting day is Saturday, the partying begins in earnest the night before and continues through Tuesday (Mardi Gras means "Fat Tuesday"). In 2010 the Carnival is scheduled on February 13 to 16

This Carnival is great event to attend at least once in life. I wander when that day will be there in my life.:(
I have made plans for so many times but some engagement always arose and I couldn't see the magnificent display of stuffed nature.

Its one of the top 6 things to experience while in Brazil. In the carnival, theer is a Samba Parade, there is street carnival in which there are free block parties led by "blocos", which are street bands and groups that parade and play down the streets. Then the Carnival balls and parties can be found all throughout the city's nightclubs, bars, beaches and hotels that throw special carnival events. Many Carnival balls feature live music, costumes, and Samba dancers.
One of the most famous Carnival balls is the Magic Ball held at the Copacabana Palace Hotel, which attracts celebrities and high-profile people.

great thread, very informative indeed and a rather rare event, i doubt many people know of it. I was wondering, are people of all age groups allowed to participate in this event or kids are not permitted?

The Reo Carnival is a famous event and it is worth watching. thousands of colors dancing together to make a colorful arena, this is basically inspired by the ancestors of the Brazilian which refers to the Red Indians and Wild West, therefore this event is the brilliant representative of the culture of South America.
