Avellaneda is a port city in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the seat of the Avellaneda Partido, whose population was 328,980. Avellaneda sits in the metropolitan area of the Greater Buenos Aires, and is connected to Buenos Aires City by several bridges over the Riachuelo River. The city was formerly known as Barracas al Sur; it was renamed on January 11, 1904 after the statesman Nicolás Avellaneda.
